Station. Limited edition of 40 risograph prints.

2022

This riso is based on a picture of Gare du Nord from the Eurostar terminal. As a French person in the UK, this is possibly the Paris station I spend most time at, a place of transit between the two halves of my life, and as thus a place full of emotions for me.

Maybe this is why I was drawn to this picture, or maybe the volumes of the 19th century great hall, the glass rooftop and the trains stretching out along the platform are what did it. Or maybe it was just looking at the people milling about as they wait to go away or for someone to arrive that caught my imagination..

I tried several designs for this print, different colour ways, thought about doing it as a screenprint but none of these ideas fell quite right until I decided to add this work to my growing collection of pink and blue risos. Even then, it took a while to get the balance of colours right: the details of the glass panels in the roof would disappear quickly in the dark mass of the roof, and I had to bring them back through painstaking adjustments and manual changes.

I do love the final result- between the volumes of the architecture and the details of the people on the concourse, I can spend a lot of time just looking at the image. I hope it evokes for you too some beautiful memories of past journeys or dreams of future escapades.
