Pigalle. Limited edition of 25 screenprints on paper.

2020

At the start of this print there was a slightly blurry photo of a rainy night in Paris in the mid 90s. I took it around the same time as the Neon prints, but here I was interested by the lights of the street, rather than focusing on a sign. The shops, the cars, the reflections of the rain on the tarmac…

I had to narrow down the colours to about 5 and 6 to make it work as a print, while making sure the image as a whole still made sense. Then when printing I found my colours clashed and argued with each other, so I had to start again, tweaking them slightly and crossing my fingers that they would work together this time, and I think they did.

I love the final result of this print, it is both clear as a street scene but almost reads like an abstract image, and it carries the right atmosphere of a wet winter night in the red light district of Paris.
