Last Night of the Fair. Limited edition of 15 screenprints on paper.

2021

Another print for the Fairground series, this new edition is a bit different as it doesn’t focus so much on specific attractions, inside taking a wide look at the main alleyway of the fair. The stalls to each side of the alley create a glow in the darkness, and people mill around in the background in a blur of colours and shapes.

The lights, the hustle and bustle, the noise and animation of the fair is what caught my interest at that point. I took several shots, catching the changing hues of the neons and the movement of the crowd. And then, when looking through my photos the next day, i noticed the couple in the foreground of this one. Just on the edge of the frame, out of focus and backlit, they almost completely blend in with the darkness of the night, but they add a lot of emotion to the scene.

I know nothing about them. Were they just arriving, leaving the fair, meeting some friends? I will never know- but their presence draws the eye in, their anonymous silhouettes like a symbol of youth, friendship, love and fun.
