Interlude. Limited edition of 20 screenprints on paper.

2022

The calm before the storm. An interlude before everything changes.

People mill around the shore, the old pier stands dark against the horizon and birds patrol the skies.

The light is already flickering, the sea shimmering with iridescent reflections as a white flare beams into the sky…

This print is the first of two I created from the same photo of Brighton’s West pier, destroyed by fire in 2003. I played with the light and colours on both, creating the illusion of a scintillating glow in the first one, and the distress of a chemical burn in the second one.

Taken together, they create the narrative of a catastrophe, the moments before and immediately after an unnamed event. The light seems to destroy the image on the paper, obliterating and scorching the landscape until only the ghost of the pier remain.
